I have recently had the honor to get to know and work with Dr. Ursula Anderson. She has worked with children for more than 70 years.
She is an internationally recognized physician whose pioneering work, research and publications in pediatrics, mental health, preventive medicine and public health have been recognized and applied world-wide.
Today while talking with her, I asked; “What is one thing educators need to know when working with children?” She replied confidently, “That their basic need is love.” She continued, “... accepting them where they are at and working with them from there. The child has to be involved. Let them know they are loved. That everything you are doing is because you love them. This opens the door.”
As educators there are many policies, benchmarks, and guidelines that can get in the way of the true purpose and reason for our work. It is vitally important that before all else, love is expressed and felt. How do you let others know you love them?
Lead with love and the rest will fall into place.
